Projects and activities in the region
Since 2012, Ecological Society BIOTICA carried out many activities in the region with the financial support of ADA contributing to life-improving of the local population as well as to environment conservation.
During the last 7 years, 3 water reservoirs (with the capacity of 100m3, 50m3 and 25m2) in the Talmaza and 2 water reservoirs (with the capacity of 50m3 and 25m2) were installed in Popeasca village instead of the old ones that contributed to the reduction of losses in the water supply system. Additionally, water meters were installed to consumers in the Centru district of Talmaza village for better evidence and fair payment of consumed water. A part of the water supply system was renovated on a total length of 3 km in the center of Cioburciu village.
The anti-flood system in the village of Cioburciu has been reconstructed to protect a part of the village (about 90 husbandries).
A water lock was constructed to regulate water levels in the Talmaza Meadow – a valuable natural area for ensuring the preservation of biological resources in the area.
On the left bank on Turunciuc 2 water locks were constructed for the creation of a natural spawning place, in order to increase the number of fish in the Dniester River.
In 2013-2019 more than 53 ha were planted on the right bank and 22 ha on the left bank of the Dniester River in the Ramsar Site ”Lower Dniester”.
All activities have contributed to improving the life of the local community as well as the quality of the environmental elements in the Lower Dniester Ramsar Site.
Since December 2017 ES BIOTICA in partnership with PA EcoContact is implementing a project funded by the Austrian Development Agency. In addition to the infrastructure works in the region, one of the project’s objectives is the creation of the Lower Dniester National Park. The drafts of the documents for creation were submitted to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. Many meetings were organized in the region with local public authorities, project experts participated at Local Councils meetings. The Administrative Council of Lower Dniester Ramsar Site was created, an advisory body empowered to manage the area and protect its biodiversity. The project team plans an information campaign for the local population, some improving works in the water system of the villages, afforestation works, and other important issues. In 2018, on the basis of the grant from the SDC-ADA Project “Strengthening the institutional framework in the water and sanitation sector in the Republic of Moldova (Phase 01)”, the first urgent steps were taken to improve the situation of the Old riverbed of Dniester – a valuable area from biodiversity point of view, namely cleaning and repairing the lock at the pumping station near Talmaza and cleaning a part of the channel that connects it with the Old riverbed of Dniester in order to unlock the flow of water passing from the Dniester River to the Old riverbed of Dniester. The overall objective of the project was to improve the ecological state and to rehabilitate the viability of the Old riverbed of Dniester. Thus, as a result of the project, the connection between the Dniester and the Old riverbed of Dniester was improved to contribute to the movement of the waters to Old riverbed of Dniester in order to halt its accelerated degradation.
