Togai swamp and Aivazia complex

Togai swamp and Aivazia complex

One of the largest portions of natural swamp in Moldova is located in the northeast of Crocmaz and has an area of 51.2 ha. The area also includes a meander in the Dniester river meadow, with an impressive diversity of over 700 species of aquatic and steppe plants, but also a portion of meadow forest.
Here, many endangered species of hydrophilic plants grow in the natural environment, such as wild vines. The swamp is predominantly covered with reeds, which in the wind soothe like a real natural vegetal carpet, resembling a dense forest, as the name "Togai" sounds in Turkish translation.
The reserve aims to conserve aquatic biodiversity, including exceptional wildlife consisting of over 20 species of mammals, 39 species of birds, 3 rare species of reptiles and 6 species of amphibians, numerous pond insects with just 19 species of dragonflies. Thus, the nature reserve "Swamp Togai" was determined as one of the national level nuclei of the National Ecological Network of the Republic of Moldova.
Indeed, on a small territory are concentrated a lot of animals included in the Red Book of Moldova, such as otter, 4 species of bats, little eagle, 4 species of owls, black stork, 3 species of reptiles, frog -field etc.
It is recommended to visit the reservation in the spring-autumn period, during the active vegetation, except for the nesting period of the birds, when the access of the visitors is forbidden.
It can be reached here on the R30, L519 or L530 roads, it is accessible without entrance fees all year round.
